What Is Junk Food & Why Is It Bad for You?

“I can’t believe you’re eating that.”

Many junk foods have heard this phrase spoken in their presence.

What exactly makes junk food so bad anyway? Beware, if you continue to read on from here, you may be kissing some of your favorite junk foods goodbye.

What Are the Effects of Junk Food?

Fast food and snack foods all have quite a bit of flavor packed inside of them and due much to that reason are not good for us. On just a short list they can create:

  • Headache
  • Depression
  • High cholesterol
  • Weight gain

Why Is Junk Food Unhealthy?

So, what’s behind this?

Sugar and fat are two of the main culprits. The drinks alone at fast food restaurants are loaded up with sugar. A 12-ounce can of soda has eight teaspoons of sugar, most drinks sizes at restaurants are much larger. The drink alone puts you in the recommended daily consumption range of six to nine teaspoons.

Trans Fat

Trans fat is the other common health danger found lurking in fast food. There isn’t any amount of trans fat that is healthy for us. Trans fat makes our bad cholesterol worse and our good cholesterol bad.

Fried Foods

Soda is the first place that sugar and hidden calories sneak in.

Fries and other fried foods are the less subtle approach. We all have heard that fried food is bad, but why? Fried foods create an inflammatory response in the body for 2-3 days! That means our body is irritated and treating this food like an intruder. While our body fights off this threat, it’s susceptible to illness or infection. A cigarette only creates an inflammatory response for 4-8 hours. A handful of fries every few days could keep you inflamed all year long.

Junk Food vs. Healthy Food Calories

The fuel we give our body should support our tissues growing and repairing. Fast food and junk food like chips and candy can pack in high calories but they don’t give us what we need to build. These foods lack proteins and micronutrients that our bodies build new tissue out of. This is why great workouts are supported by great nutrition. Breaking your body down and asking it to rebuild with poor quality pieces just isn’t fair. Our bodies make do with the supplies it’s given but this will ultimately lead to a breakdown.

How To Avoid Eating Junk Food

Although many junk foods are packed full of flavor it’s not packing years onto your life.

Junk food, whether it’s chips, candy, or good old burgers and fries, create inflammation. The higher our inflammation, the lower our health. Once we’ve said no to junk, here are some things to say yes to:

  • Cooking and eating meals at your home
  • Not purchasing snack foods to keep around the house
  • Adding anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric and garlic
  • Drinking half your bodyweight in ounces of water daily
